Starkey Hear Now: Complete!

Hey! So, as I’ve posted about before, I applied to Starkey’s Hear Now program, and I was approved! I picked up my hearing aids yesterday, May 19th, and let me tell ya, it’s a huge difference in sound from my previous ones.
My last hearing aids were from Phonak, and while they were nice, these Starkey HAs are very different, and I would even call them better than the Phonak Naidas. They need some adjustments, obviously, but I’ve been wearing them for two days now, and I greatly prefer the sound of Starkey’s i110 to Phonak Naida Q50 UP. The volume is a bit louder than my Naidas, and I’m getting used to the new sound, but it’s going good so far!

New Day, I Guess

No more job at Kum and Go. I was fired, basically for being disabled. Already talking to a lawyer about it, but other than that, I don’t really feel like talking about it right now. Maybe in a future post.
Steven, the new kitten, is getting along famously with the other cats and with Remi. He rubs against Remi and purrs, plays with her and Jasper. He tries to play with Wheatley, but she’s not having it, haha. She tolerates it quite well when he rubs up against her, but she’s not really interested in interaction with other animals. She just wants to snuggle with me.
When Steven came to us,  he was a tiny bit thin, so we’ve been feeding him kitten kibble and supplementing it with wet kitten food to fatten him up, and boy, has he gained weight! He’s normal kitten size now, and he’s got the average kitten belly. Gosh, is he rambunctious! He no longer climbs legs. We’ve discouraged that. Instead, he just climbs counters, so we have to constantly bring him down off the kitchen counters. At his first home, he was fed lots of human food, so we are trying to break him of that by feeding him NO human food, whatsoever, and that means pushing him away when he tries to steal food off our plates.
I bought a laser pointer for him and Jasper, and they love it. Jasper will steal it out of the drawer and bring it to us! She loves it.
I filmed a video on my YouTube channel about cochlear implants and me, and you should check it out! I had my appointment for that already, and I’ll be posting about that soon, so keep an eye out. I also purchased some tcoil headphones, so I’m gonna be posting a review video about those in a day or so, but probably today.
Eventually, I’d like to make YouTube and activism my job, of sorts, so I’m going to be working on getting more involved in that sort of thing in the future. I need better equipment, though. My laptop is a…piece of crap, suffice to say.
I think that’s all for now. Thanks for reading!
Oh, as a bonus, here’s my latest hearing aid pimp:

He’s Gone!

So, the crappy roommate R is gone! Really, truly gone! I feel like I should feel bad for being so happy that another person is out of my life, but…I just can’t feel bad. He didn’t deserve to live in a place where he wasn’t paying rent alongside a pair of people who ACTUALLY contribute to the household. He has never even bought toilet paper.  :|

He left us an ungodly mess to clean up. It was horrible. It took us over 2 hours to clean out the room and move his mattress and box spring downstairs, and it took Crobat over 20 trips to the dumpster with a box or two each time. So, to get everything down there, it was a LOT of steps and a LOT of work. There were crushed cookies on the floor IN THE CLOSET. There were empty containers and jugs from drinks, like sweet tea and Fanta. There was a TON of clothing, and I’m baffled as to why he would leave so much clothing behind. It was like he just didn’t care.

Now, Crobat and I are aware that it was one big, final Fuck You toward us, but it still makes us mad at how nonchalant he was about being confronted with that. He said something along the lines of, “That’s what happens when you give someone such a short deadline to move out.” Bull-fucking-shit, R, you had exactly 3 weeks to get your shit organized and you waited until the last second. We told him on the 15th of June that we wanted him out, basically, and the last couple days before he left I asked him if he had packed and he said he was all packed up. The room had barely changed at all in that time. Pfeh.

R also had the NERVE to ask Crobat if we (Crobat and me) would store the rest of his stuff here, in our tiny apartment, and she flat-out said no. Apparently, it made him very upset, as the next time Crobat saw him, he was bawling. He knew we were going to throw away anything he left behind, way before the move-out date. There is no excuse for him waiting until the last minute to ask and/or get the U-Haul ready. Oh- that’s right, he moved using an SUV because he couldn’t get a U-Haul trailer or truck in time, because he waited until the last minute, and expected to be able to go pick up a trailer for an interstate move the day of or before.

Everything he did in regards to moving out was so, so lazy and awful. He could have made it easy on not only himself, but Crobat and me, but he chose instead to be a giant douchecanoe.

Either way, we’re glad to have him out. I have a bedroom now instead of camping out in the living room. We have a functional living room with a coffee table, a TV/game system stand, and chairs, and even a little mini-fridge in there. Jasper, Crobat’s cat, was pretty freaked out at first what with everything having been moved around, but she’s doing much better. My cat, Wheatley, could not care less! Remi’s cage is now in my bedroom and she seems to like that. It’s also got a dog bed and 3 blankets, so I’m sure she’s comfortable.

Pictures of R’s horrible mess to follow. By the way, he had a couple people helping him move, and it really makes me wonder what they thought as they helped him bring his small amount of possessions downstairs and what they thought as they saw that massive mess.

New Wheelchair!

Yo! So, lack of updates due to working hardcore at my new job. It’s literally only a couple of blocks from my house, so I don’t have to wheel too far OR depend on rides from my roommate, Crobat! It’s pretty good.
Anyway, I picked up my wheelchair this morning! It’s a Quickie Q7 chair, with removable plastic side guards, swing away armrests, and an angle adjustable footplate. It’s pretty snazzy.

It’s fancy! It rolls so smoothly, and I absolutely love the color. I wasn’t sure if I would like it, but I definitely do. I might switch out the hand rims for my current ones, to keep them nice and all, but we’ll see. The back also folds and the push handles fold down as well! I was also given a Jay Basic cushion, so hopefully, that one does the trick for me. They tried to get a fancier cushion approved, but Medicare wasn’t having that. So, simple cushion instead.
So far, even though I’ve only been in it for a few minutes, it’s definitely much, much more comfortable than my previous one, which was two inches too narrow and one inch too short. It makes a huge difference! I also like the open frame design much better. I feel like it’s kinda sleek, yknow?
Anyhow, that’s my new chair. More pictures to come, but yeah! :D I love it so far. I’ll review it again in a couple days after I’ve had a chance to use it more.

Grey Hair and New Aids!

So, I promised to post about my new hearing aids today, so here it is! These were obtained in the middle beginning of May- on my birthday, actually- and were programmed at the end of the month, so I’ve been hearing out of them for about 11 days or so.

These are the Oticon Chili SP9 hearing aids with no pimpage….

And here was one of my favorite pimps on them over the past few days….

And here’s a more…photogenic version of that pimp, earmolds included.

ALSO I got new earmolds! Those swirly colorful ones up there are great, but I wanted something a little more…flashy. So, here we go.

7utq5gk

Don’t mind the little fuzz in the side of the picture! Lol.

Anyway, the Chili sounds great. It’s crisp and clear, though sometimes it can be too crisp, I suppose after I’ve been hearing for too long and I’m just tired of it (sensory overload! woo!). But, it sounds great, even better than the last ones I had. Also, I can change programs on BOTH hearing aids by pressing the button on only ONE! :D I’m thrilled about that one, to be honest. The volume wheel is a little annoying, but not so bad, and I have a huge amount of volume control. It’s got other fancy features as well, but that’s the main one that interests me. <:

Any suggestions for my next pimp? You should send me links to (peel-off) nail stickers! Small decorative stickers work great too to go on top of the nail wraps. :D

That’s all for today. I’m off!

Update: 4/20

So, it’s been another several months since I last updated. I’m not very good at blogging, but I’m trying to get better!

I have broken up with my boyfriend since my last post. It’s kind of a long story, but long story short, he displays a complete lack of respect or care for anyone but himself, and is rather frightening in his lack of individuality. He tends to copy people, and I’ve noticed he copies me quite a lot. I understand it’s likely primarily due to identity impermanence from BPD, but I don’t think that’s an excuse. So, breaking up with him meant that I have moved my things to the living room, and I live there now! It’s pretty comfortable, and I have a nice window where the cats can rest and look out onto the street below.

I have new hearing aids, as well! They’ll get here around mid-May, and I’ll have them programmed then, and then I’ll have pictures. For now, they are silver Oticon Chili SP9, so they’re not the most recent, but they’re top of the line for the model. I’ve found that I prefer Oticon’s sound to Phonak’s, because Phonak sounds a bit noisy and hazy. The only thing I dislike about Oticon is that the sound is very, very crisp. I’m hoping that having these programmed in the office will make it easier to find what I like and don’t like, so adjustments can be made right there with no issue. I already have new earmolds, and my tubing is bright purple, too! I can’t wait to get them. Here is what my current hearing aids look like right now:

HAs.jpg

They’re pretty cute! But, my new ones will be larger, and will help me hear much better. The earmolds are new- orange/purple/light green silicone with a shiny finish, full shell, with a large vent. To be honest, the fact that my right tubing is longer than the left bothers me greatly! I know it has to be that way, because that’s simply how my ears are, but it’s bothersome! OCD problems, weh. The earmolds are great, though- my last silicone ones were from Sam’s Club, and they started to cause pressure sores.

Health-wise, I have been rather…eh. I have been dealing with severe ear pain and pressure for a long time now, and I thought it was an ear infection, but it turns out that it is eustachian tube dysfunction. I have a bunch of fluid behind my ear drums, and it’s causing pressure and pain! I was prescribed Prednisone and a decongestant to see if it would help, but it did nothing but make me feel sickly, so instead, I have an appointment to see an ENT in mid-May. The next step is probably going to be ear tubes to relieve the pressure and let the fluid drain. The doctor I saw for it was wonderful, though. She is patient and kind, and does not find me to be a problem- just a complex case!

Aside from the eustachian tube stuff, I’m dealing with mysterious head pain on the left side, so we’re looking into that more. I’ve had an MRI, which came back clean, so the next step is a neurologist. I’ve also been severely fatigued, moreso than usual. It makes it difficult to stand for more than a few moments. I only feel semi-decent so long as I’m lying down. It’s been going on for a while.

Other than all that, there isn’t much to report! I’ll try and get a video update out soon. I just have to wait until I have the house to myself!

I’ve been gone an age!

So, I’ve been gone a while! It’s been very busy!

First, I moved to Virginia, and not long after that, I moved to Des Moines, Iowa! Well, near there. It’s a smaller town and it’s kinda quaint, but it’s not bad here! Unfortunately, the entire area tends to smell a little bit- kind of like dog dung, haha! Evidently this is due to a pig slaughtering plant nearby, and it is actually the smell of dead, rotting pig. Mm-mmm. Delicious….

I now live with 2 people- my boyfriend Rowan, and our good friend/family member Amber. We still have both dogs and 3 cats now, and they’re all settling in well to their new home.

I’ve re-done my hearing aids a few times in the past months, but so far my favorite is this one- it makes me feel like I’m wearing galaxies in my ears! The earmolds are candy purple acrylic with green glitter in them and I’m in absolute love. I also received these cute Chi’s Sweet Home tube riders from EarSuspenders on Etsy the same day I got my earmolds! They’re just DARLING, even if they’re a little large, and I’m also in love with them.

Previous pimp with Duck Tape! Changed it the same day!

My previous earmolds were this bright orange-red color. They were cool and all, but they were silicone, and that made them more difficult to insert. These acrylic ones are much easier to put in, and I think they look cooler, as they’re skeleton molds instead of full shell!

I’ve also recently had these Tube Twists from Hayleigh’s Cherished Charms on Etsy! They were soft and stretchy- much softer than I thought they’d be, but there ya go. They were rainbow ones, and I loved them, but they kinda put pressure on my ears cause I have such tiny ears. >:  My tubes are very small cause I have such tiny ears, so the tube twists were just a little too long for comfort. But! They were super cool and I recommend them to everyone else who has big enough ears to wear them.

We also moved house! So now instead of the big house, we’re in a small 2 bedroom apartment ion which I share a room with my boyfriend, Rowan, and Amber has her own room. It’s a little odd of a place, but it’s lovely and it already feels like home.

Finally, I was hired on at Target! It’s been fabulous and I’m so happy to have something to do 2-3 days a week. It’s the perfect job for me right now, and I meet some lovely people that come through my line.

Other than that, I haven’t had much going on! I’m pretty boring otherwise. <:  Thanks for reading, all! :D

Knitted 3 hats in 2 days!

So I guess I’ve been on a hat kick lately. I started with this hat, the green and purple one….

It took a little longer because the yarn weight was closer to chunky, but I did it on 9mm, 16 inch circular needles. I cast on 52 stitches, using Michael’s Charisma yarn and a long-tail cast on, and did k1p1 ribbing for maybe five rows or so? Then I knitted all the way until the top, started decreasing, et voila. I use this method to make all hats pretty much!

After that one, I worked on this, a fuzzy pink hat for my friend Tori (over at crystallinestarflakes).

I like the way this one came out, a lot! I used some Isaac Mizrahi Craft yarn and this stuff is just lovely. It’s super soft and plush, and very warm! This’ll make a great winter hat for xem, seeing as xe is in NY and the winters up there can get awful. It’s not quite slouchy, but it’s still lovely and fun and cute! I used 12mm, 16 inch circular needles, cast on 34 stitches, and did the same as above- k1p1 ribbing, followed by knitting the rest of it up. I almost wish I could keep this for myself, it’s so soft! I’ll have to make a matching one in a different color.

After that, I moved on to this one this morning. I didn’t take a flat picture, however.

This one is, again Isaac Mizrahi yarn. I love the entire collection of yarn, it’s all such fun colors, nice weights, and great textures! This yarn was less fluffy, but still called for large gauge needles- again 12mm, 16 inch circular needles. I cast on 36 stitches, long-tail cast on again, and the same as above- k1p1 rib, knit all the way up after a few rows. This one I worked up in about 3 hours this morning after I woke up and wanted something easy and fun to knit. This was JUST the thing! I had a good time with this, seeing as it worked up so fast. Watching your progress come together so quickly is just so satisfying, isn’t it?  <:

Virginia Living Museum

So Stevie and I went there yesterday, the 26th! We had a great time. We saw all kinds of cool things.

Including some flowers, and a bunch of frogs! Photodump ahead.

Alligator foot!

Lionfish!

Tiny shark!

I thought this statue was pretty cool. It’s a lovely, dynamic thing.

There was this one, too! I thought it was also lovely.

We saw some red wolves as well! They were all lounging, and one had dug a little ditch to lie in and cool off.

Lunch for me was a burger. Stevie got some kind of sub thing, and we shared an order of cheese fries!

Dump of some shots that I thought were cool or pretty.

Lizard!

Frog!

There are more, but a bunch were poor shots, so those are the good ones.

I had a fantastic time. I even finished knitting my wheelchair bag, so it totally came in handy! As well, Stevie was kind enough to help me adjust the brakes on my chair, so now they work! I have working brakes! :D
